Jaqai Mickelsen - Mash-ups

In the spirit of "better late than never", here it is. I had the idea and just wanted to see what it would look like.

Wow, how Garfield has changed!

If this were on G-G, it would just be a halftone triangle!

That is awesome.

Ha!! How existential. Is it sad that I read this in Bill Murray's voice?

It's interesting how everything about Garfield has changed except his coloring and his stripey designs. I used to copy Garfield comics out of the Sunday paper as a kid and I never really got over coloring my cats with that little triangle back stripe, as seen here.

It's funny. Garfield is what really got me into drawing in the first place. Jim Davis's world/art work is what made me want to be a syndicated cartoonist. (When I found out later in life that Jim Davis hasn't been drawing the strip since around 1981 I was devastated.) But yeah - I drew him/Odie/Jon cooooonstantly.

Funnily enough, drawing these guys carefully with reference for the first time in a billion years (I broke out a few of my old Garfield books), I learned that a lot of my current drawing habits are held over from my early Jim Davis emulation. It was fun to rediscover.

Also, truth be told, this is the first time I'd ever drawn "original model" Garfield. And wooow did it take a lot of redos.

(Also, dammit, modern Garfield's nose is too big.)
