Marie Criddle - Hands

I was working on different hand poses then kind of built the scene around them but I'm a little unsatisfied about the punchee's facial expression. I don't think it shows enough movement from the punch, but I'm drawing a blank on how to correct it. Any ideas? I'm also trying my hand (ha!) at more digital coloring...I've discovered that if I have ACTUAL watercolors out, my kid tries to eat them. :)

That's cool. I was just gonna draw a hand or two :-)

I'm not sure, but I think it might help if the punchee's head was facing more to the left (and, you know, maybe wide-eyed and spitting out blood and/or teeth).

And maybe give your kid a snack while you're painting? A bowl of Cheerios can keep my toddler occupied for at least 5 minutes!

I do like the compressed cheek on the punchee, though. Reminds me of that fight at the end of Porco Rosso.

Adam - I haven't seen Porco Rosso yet, but I've heard great things! Maybe from you? Probably from you.

And thanks for the input! I agree, I can definitely tilt the punchee's head to respond to the impact. And open eyes could add to a comic effort. Bloody teeth...you're cruel. I'll have to consult my husband for details. :D

Thanks again!

I guess I am about the comic effect, aren't I?

I don't remember talking about Porco Rosso, but yeah, you should see it. Classic Miyazaki flick.

Hi Marie

Thinking the coloring technique gives your drawing a comic book feel, iMHO. Maybe change the expression on the punchee's eyebrows to surprise or anger? And his red tie could show some movement too. Plus what Adam said minus the blood & teeth...heehee! In addition to the Cheerios you could provide a cheep set of color markers (or ?) for your child and let them paint like mommy!

Love the color and the so very subtle "bam" effect (the purple background) around the fist.

Adam - You did, I swear! Maybe in one of your posts? Hmm...

Laura - Thanks so much for the input! I'll definitely take that into a revision. And I'm glad to see commenting is working for you. Yay!

Helen - Thanks! I actually had that in black and yellow, then erased it because it was TOO comic-y. However, it left a shadow and I think I'm okay with that. :)

My wife has a made-up word for this sort of thing. It goes a little something like this:

DUUZSH!

It's a bit of a catchphrase for her, actually.

If I'd said that this picture reminds me of my wife, you would have gotten the wrong impression!
